Digital Goa, Nov 1 – Goa govt has decided to pay additional Rs 1.90 per student per meal as per demands of the Self Help Groups supplying midday meals to schools, informed CM Pramod Sawant. “The rates will be hiked but quality should not be compromised. They will have to give food as per quality specified by us. Excuses such as 50 % children are not eating won’t work,” asserted Sawant. In many cases the food quality is not maintained, he said. As per Education dept officials, proposal has already been moved to increase the allocation per child from Rs 6.11 to Rs 8 per child in the pre-primary and primary category and Rs 10 for upper primary schools. Midday meals supplying Self Help Groups(SHG) have been demanding that the meal rates be hiked by the government at the earliest. They have also given ultimatum to the govt of discontinuing the meals supply from this month. SHGs have also claimed that their dues are yet to be cleared. Many midday meal suppliers in South Goa have already discontinued with the meals supplies stating that the scheme is not economically viable.
