Digital Goa, Nov 2 – Both Dabolim and Mopa Airports will operate simultaneously in Goa and Mopa will cater to growth in air traffic which could not be accommodated hitherto due to space and timing constraints, said Union minister of state for civil aviation VK Singh. Allaying fears that flight operations at Dabolim may shut down for civilian flights once Mopa starts, the Union minister said, “The Central government has no intention to shut the Dabolim airport, I am here to clarify that the new airport will not lead to the closure of the previous airport.” He further added that the new airport will be provided with more connectivity. “If today Dabolim is connected to 20 cities, the next 20 cities that currently cannot be accommodated at Dabolim will go to Mopa.” He also pointed out that center had already taken a cabinet decision in June 2010 that both the airports will operate in parallel. Dabolim will be run by the Airport Authority of India(AAI) and the Mopa will be run by GMR, he added. He was speaking on the sidelines of the CANSO (Civil Air Navigation Services Organization) Asia Pacific Conference. When queried if there will be increase in activities of Indian Navy, which owns and operates airfield at Dabolim, the Union Minister said that there are separate discussion about defence requirements but there will be no planned reduction in traffic at Dabolim due to this.
Decision about inauguration of Mopa Airport will be taken sometime next month, informed CM Pramod Sawant.
