11 infants abandoned in Goa in 5 years; at least 7 of them were girls & 3 died

Digital Goa, Oct 31 – Goa has recorded 11 cases of new-born abandonment, most of them in unsafe places in the past 5 years. Three of the abandoned infants succumbed to aftermath of unsafe abandonments varying from dog bite to death due to being dumped in garbage, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has pointed out. Incidentally, 7 of the 11 abandoned children are girls, 2 are boys and gender is not specified in 2 of the cases in the list released by the commission. Expressing concern over the cases, the commission has issued advisory for ‘Safe Surrender in Context of Infant Abandonment Cases’ to several govt agencies including the Women and Child Development Dept, Health Dept and Goa Police. Commission has sought Action Taken Report (ATR) within 4 weeks from these authorities. In its advisory, among other suggestions, the commission has asked the Women & Child Dept to ensure that the specialized adoption agencies in Goa, i.e. Matruchaaya and Caritas Goa set up at their own home cradle systems to receive abandoned children.
