Fish traders seek cut in registration fee; minister asks them to register soon

Digital Goa, Oct 25 — Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar today directed fish traders operating on various fisheries jetties in the State to register themselves with the govt in order to operate from the jetty. Govt is losing revenue since none of the fish traders have registered, despite enactment of legislation in 2020 making registration mandatory, the minister said. A joint meeting of minister, officials, trawler owners and fish traders was held today in Porvorim. Fisheries Dept had sealed the fishing jetties of Malim, Cutbona and Vasco for failure to register fishing traders with the government. Minister pointed out that though Govt spends huge money on repairs of these jetties and providing subsidised fuel to trawlers, there is no revenue coming from the fish trade to govt. Trawler owners and fish traders sought relaxation in Rs one lakh registration fees charged by the Dept. The Fisheries Director was asked to discuss the fee issue with the fish traders and immediately commence with the registration process.
