Sesa Goa issues retrenchment notice to over 1,500 mining workers after notice of lease vacation

Digital Goa, July 6 – Sesa Mining Corporation has issued a retrenchment notice to over 1,500 workers attached to their mining operations in the state. The company has made an application before the Labour Ministry, Govt of India to retrench all the workers from October 5, 2022. The notice has pointed out to the notice from Goa govt directing the company to remove all plants, machinery, equipment and workforce from the premises and vacate the mines as leaseholder before June 7, 2022. “While most of the mining companies in Goa had separated their employees in 2018 itself, the Company had retained its employees engaged in mining operations in spite of discontinuation of mining activities”, said the notice. Court decisions curtailing lease period and recent notice of Mines Dept has forced company to stop all mining operations and hence retrench all employees engaged in mining activity, said the notice. Meanwhile, Puti Gaokar of United Mines Workers Union has demanded that govt should either auction the leases or start mining through corporation within a month to save thousands of workers from being retrenched.
