High Court directs Goa govt to take immediate action to protect prehistoric petroglyphs at Usgalimol
Digital Goa, June 6 – High Court has directed Goa govt to take immediate action in the alleged haphazard quarrying of laterite stones in the vicinity of prehistoric rock carvings at Pansaimol-Usgalimol in Quepem. The petroglyphs recently have been included in the tentative UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. High Court has ordered action by taking Suo Motu cognizance of an article that appeared in the local daily pointing out that laterite quarrying at hardly 300m distance from Pansaimol petroglyphs is threatening the prehistoric rock art. Court has also asked Director of Archives and Archaeology, as well as the ASI to file affidavits regarding steps taken by them for the maintenance and preservation of the petroglyphs as well as other similar sites in the State of Goa, if any. Next hearing in the matter is scheduled on June 14.
