Taking suo motu cognizance of ‘The Navhind Times’ report on failure of state to provide disabled-friendly bus stations, the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has issued notices to Chief Secretary (CS) and managing director (MD) of Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL) asking them to file status report by January 5.
The commission, headed by U V Bakre, observed that prima facie there is violation of human rights of persons with disability, hence it took cognizance
of the news. This daily had highlighted hardships faced by the disabled persons at the bus termini and at bus stops and even in the buses and autorickshaws.
The news had also reported that the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued draft guidelines, seeking to make bus terminals and stops more accessible by introducing a uniform set of norms for all states to follow while constructing such facilities. But in Goa, not just bus stops but also major termini, including those in Panaji, Mapusa and Margao have no facilities for the differently-abled.
