Tender floated for construction of new ‘Tar bridge’ in Mapusa

Mapusa: In a bid to ease traffic congestion, and  improve the traffic movement, the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has floated a tender for the construction of a new four-lane Tar bridge, at an estimated cost of Rs 8.57 crore.

The Tar bridge near Milagres church in Mapusa is one of the important entry points for the people of neighboring villages – Bastora, Moira Nachinola.  Vehicles enter the town via highway from Tar-Bastora junction.

The existing bridge was constructed in 1961-62, and is now catering to heavy vehicular movement.

Around 26,000 vehicles use the Tar bridge on a daily basis as per the survey conducted by the PWD.

Being a crucial entry point, heavy traffic flow is witnessed during the peak hours; traffic congestion is witnessed as the bridge is quite narrow.

The Mapusa Municipal Council had passed a resolution to construct new bridge at the existing place. The new bridge would have four lanes, with a length of around 30 metres.

The construction work will begin after the tender procedure is completed, and is expected to be completed in eight months’ time once the work order is awarded. Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, who is also vice chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), said that “we have floated a tender for the construction of Tar bridge.”

“The existing bridge will be demolished, and a temporary arrangement will be made for crossing over by placing pipes in water. Alignment of the bridge will be changed slightly,” said D’Souza.
