Rate of crime against women in Goa up by 24% under BJP govt: AIMC

Panaji: Interim president of All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) Netta D’Souza on Thursday said that the rate of crime against women in Goa has increased under Chief Minister Pramod Sawant-led government.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji along with state’s Mahila Congress president Beena Naik, D’Souza accused Chief Minister Pramod Sawant of making Goa a hub of sex trafficking.

“The total rate of crime against women in Goa has increased by 24 per cent under the current government. Every week Goa registers four crimes against women. Over 1000 such cases have been registered from 2017 to February 2021. As many as 743 women are missing in Goa. Did the BJP government in Goa even try finding these missing women,” she questioned.

Referring to the gang-rape of two minor girls at Benaulim beach, D’Souza said that Sawant’s remarks “that parents need to introspect about why their daughters were out late at night” reflect BJP’s “anti-women” mindset.

“The rate of crime of sex trafficking in Goa is 1.1 per cent which is the highest in India. I am saying without any hesitation that Chief Minister has made Goa the hub of trafficking,” she said.

D’Souza said that unemployment rate in Goa is all-time high and Goa is witnessing rampant increase in illegal activities including “large scale corruption” of the current government.

She alleged that Aam Aadmi Party and All India Trinamool Congress are contesting the 2022 Goa Assembly polls only with an aim to divide the votes and to benefit the ruling BJP.

When asked if Congress leadership is considering reserving party tickets to women for the Goa polls on the lines of Uttar Pradesh where the grand old party has announced that 40 per cent of the tickets will be given to women, D’Souza said that Mahila Congress will not demand reservation and leave it to the party leadership to decide on tickets distribution.

D’Souza, however, said that she would like to see many women contesting the elections and expressed confidence that Congress would form the next government in Goa and many women would be part of it.
