Mapusa: Inspection of Mapusa KTC bus stand was held to check on required safety of passengers and other stakeholders.
Inspection was conducted by North Goa District Road Safety Monitoring Cell along with officials of various departments. Issues pertaining to fire safety and tea kiosk at passenger platform, encroaching open space of the bus bay were looked into.
The inspection of the bus stand was carried out by Vishnu Shetgaonkar, divisional traffic officer KTCL; fire station in charge Bosco Ferrao; Rupesh Samant, Mapusa Municipality JE; Nadeem Sheikh, Pawan N Shet and Pravin Wadkar from transport department; Uday Tamhankar, sanitary inspector from UHC Mapusa and Tahir Noronha, co-coordinator Charles Correia Foundation and Consumer Forum volunteers.
During the inspection, it was found that the recommendations of the fire department were not implemented as electrical cables were found haphazardly routed through shops and offices and electrical junction boxes and cable joints were found lying exposed.
Stacking of unwanted papers, cardboards and garbage found to a fire hazard; first-aid portable fire extinguishers were not found installed in shops and offices. A concern was also raised over fire hydrants, which lacked operating valves and pump. Another major issue which was pointed out was the tea stall being constructed near the pay toilet for women on the bus stand platform by encroaching the passenger seating area.
The officials also raised concern over metal fabrication on which huge hoardings are erected; the structure was found to be rusted, thus posing a risk of collapsing. Besides concrete slabs over drains were found to have been broken at various places. Coordinator for GOACAN Roland Martins highlighted the importance of such inspections for compliance, and sought the cooperation of all partner departments.
He emphasized that early action can prevent accidents and save precious lives and property. It was informed that Mapusa Municipal Council, Urban Health Centre and Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited will submit their action taken reports on inspection findings by mid- November to Salim Sheikh, Deputy SP, traffic, and Monitoring Cell chairman for onward submission to the North Goa Collector.
