Ex-chief minister and former senior Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro, along with nine other leaders from Goa, formally joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata on Wednesday.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary of the party MP Abhishek Banerjee formally inducted the group led by Faleiro into the party.
Nine persons, who joined TMC along with Luizinho include former MGP MLA Lavoo Mamledar, former general secretary of GPCC Yatish Naik, Vijay V Poi, Mario Pinto De Santana, Anand Naik, Rabindranath Faleiro, writer N Shivdas, social activists Rajendra Shivaji Kakodkar and president of South Goa Advocates Association Antonio Monteiro Clovis Da Costa.
Addressing the media after joining TMC, Faleiro said he has joined Mamata didi and the Trinamool Congress, as Goa needs a credible alternative. He also gave a call for a united Congress to fight against divisive forces.
“Goa is today backward. But it is the jewel in the crown of India. Goa
deserves the best,” Faleiro said, adding that he has appealed to Mamata Banerjee to come to Goa and protect Goa’s culture and identity.
The former chief minister also expressed confidence that the people of Goa will support TMC during the upcoming assembly elections to form its government by defeating BJP.
Praising the West Bengal Chief Minister, Faleiro said that Mamata has shown that she can fight against divisive forces ruling in the country.
“Didi has been a street fighter, a fighter par excellence. They (BJP government at the Centre) tried everything, used all agencies; but could not break her indomitable spirit and unparalleled courage,” he said.
Meanwhile, the TMC chief said, “Together, we will stand up for every Goan, fight divisive forces and work towards ushering in a new dawn for Goa.”
After the entry of the Goan leaders into her party, Mamata tweeted, “It’s a matter of great pride for me to welcome former Goa CM, 7-time MLA and stalwart Goan leader Luizinho Faleiro to the Trinamool Congress family. Together we will stand up for every Goan, fight divisive forces and work towards ushering in a new dawn for Goa.”
