Betting racket busted; 4 held

The Crime Branch police, on Wednesday,  informed that they have busted Indian Premier League (IPL) betting racket during a raid at a guesthouse in Naikawado, Calangute on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The police said they have arrested four alleged bookies Pratap Singh (29), Rajveer Singh (30), Mohan Lal (33) and Ajay Yadav (33), all from Rajasthan.

According to the police, the raid was conducted based on a source information.

The alleged accused were accepting bets from customers from various places on the live cricket match of IPL played between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings held on September 28, the police said.

“The accused were found operating an IPL betting racket using apps and software on their computer devices,” said Crime Branch SP Shobhit Saksena.

According to the police, it was found that the alleged accused were accepting bets on the ongoing IPL games, and had set up a base in Goa in order to avoid detection in Rajasthan.

It was revealed that they had taken bets worth over Rs 4 lakh on an ongoing match of September 28, the police said.

The police during the raid have seized laptop, mobiles, cash of Rs 6,500 and other articles all worth around Rs 2 lakh. The raid was conducted by the crime branch team led by PIs Rahul Parab, Narayan Chimulkar and PSI Nitin Halarnkar. PSI Halarnkar is investigating the case.
