Margao: Former Fisheries minister Avertano Furtado is all set to join the Congress party on Tuesday.
In a day of hectic political developments, Furtado held a series of meetings with his supporters, who gave their nod to Furtado to join the Congress party.
Speaking to this daily, Furtado said, “I had received several offers from various political parties but my supporters want me to join the Congress party.”
Stating that his induction into the party will happen by Tuesday evening, Furtado said he will contest the forthcoming assembly elections on Congress ticket.
According to sources, leaders of Trinamool Congress party had also met Furtado at his office on Monday morning in a last-minute bid to impress upon him to join the Mamata Banerjee-led party. However, Furtado rejected the offer and decided to join Congress instead, said the sources.
“I have been assured of the party ticket but before I could commit, I had to speak to my supporters on my political move,” Furtado said.
Furtado has earlier served as Fisheries minister in the BJP government led by former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar. Furtado had won the 2012 assembly election from Navelim as an independent candidate and extended support to the then BJP-led government.
