Survey to ‘facilitate’ selection of BJP candidates for assembly polls

Panaji: National general secretary (organisation) of the Bharatiya Janata Party, B L Santhosh paid a short weekend visit to Goa to discuss the survey of all 40 electoral constituencies in the state taken up by the party, in order to facilitate the selection of party’s candidates for the 2022 state assembly election.

The survey is being carried out through an impartial and professional system put up in place by the party’s central leadership, and is expected to be completed by next month.

The stakeholders including political observers as well as party workers and supporters would be a part of this survey. Those conducting the survey will also consider winnability as the main criteria of the survey.

Santhosh, during his visit to Goa on August 28, met state BJP president Sadanand Tanawade and carried out deliberation with him as linked to the particular survey. He also interacted with the survey team, and left the state in the evening.

It is also learnt from reliable sources that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has suggested to the BJP, a ratio for selecting the candidates for the forthcoming state assembly polls. This ratio puts a ceiling over the number of Catholic candidates to be fielded by the party, for the said election.

Presently, there are 15 Catholic MLAs with the BJP, in the state.

Tanawade, while speaking to this daily, stated that the ongoing survey of the electoral constituencies is related to the state assembly elections.

“It is being conducted by the party leadership in New Delhi and as such I don’t have any details about it,” he added.

A cabinet minister in the BJP government Michael Lobo, confirming the survey carried out by his party in all 40 electoral constituencies, stated that it has been mainly undertaken to find out the winnability prospects of the candidates in the respective constituencies.

“I don’t think the survey will interfere with the religion of the candidates, as victory of the candidates would be important for the party and not their religion,” he noted.
