Rehabilitation of Shirgao fields: WRD files status report before HC

Panaji : A status report has been filed by the water resources department (WRD) before the High Court of Bombay at Goa, which sets out the status of the rehabilitation of Shirgao fields, creeks and sluice gates.

Agricultural fields of nearly 30 hectare affected by mining silt were brought back to original cultivation state by the Water Resource Department after Shirgao villagers petitioned the High Court.

Environmental rehabilitation work to the tune of Rs 4.04 crore has been taken up in the mining- affected village by using funds sourced through mining companies.

According to the WRD status report, Pune-based company, which has been assigned the

task of rehabilitation by reclaiming the agricultural fields affected by the mining silt, removing silt from rivulets, reconstruction of two sluices and cutting and removal of bushes from agricultural fields, has been paid Rs 1.67 crore so far.

The pace of work was affected due to COVID pandemic and is now slated to be completed by March 2022.

The report also states that of the 3.73 km of total length of rivulets, 2.517 km that is nearly 67.4 per cent of desilting

has been completed. Of the nearly 70 hectare of fields, 30 hectare have been desilted and brought under cultivation while desiltation of remaining 40 hectare will be completed by March 2022.
