NMP issue: Congress stages protest against Modi govt

Chodankar says the policy of the Union government to sell national assets will cause further damage to Indian economy

Panaji: The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee along with Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader  Digambar Kamat and GPCC president Girish Chodankar, on Saturday, staged a protest against the BJP government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the issue of privatizing different sectors under the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP).

The opposition party protesting in Panaji alleged that the Modi government is out to sell road, rail, airports, ports electricity, gas, petrol, mines, stadium, warehouses, telecom sector and other national assets.

Chodankar said that the “policy of the Union government to sell national assets” will cause further damage to the

Indian economy.

“Demonetisation finished the Indian economy.  People are suffering because of government’s mismanagement. By selling gold reserves worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore, the government has admitted that the economy has weakened,” the GPCC president said.

Kamat lashed out at the BJP-led government stating that privatisation of rail and airports will lead to the

country’s bankruptcy.

“Strategic assets are never to be sold; this is what every country says as those assets are of importance. The created assets are never sold unless there is an emergency,” he said.

Youth Congress president Varad Mardolkar said “the national assets created by Congress in the last 70 years, today are being sold by BJP to Prime Minister’s crony

capitalist friends.”

“The national assets are being sold by the central government to Ambani and Adani groups,” he said.

The other frontal wings of the Congress party, including Mahila Congress took part in the protest.

Meanwhile, GPCC chief Chodankar said that the party will complete the process of reconstituting the block committees over the next 20 days.

“We will be appointing the block presidents immediately with a batch of five block presidents at a time. These presidents will be those who are active, and have been taking active part in day-to-day activities. We will start appointing them in the next three to four days and complete the entire assignments of reconstituting the dissolved committees over the 20 days,” he said.

He said that Congress is preparing itself in all 40 seats for the 2022 Assembly polls as told by our AICC election observer to Goa P Chidambaram.

“People of Goa have decided that Congress should be given full power this time to run the next government. We want opposition so they should be there…five–six seats. This is a democratic setup and we don’t say BJP-mukt Bharat. Opposition has a role, hence we want healthy opposition to run the government,” Chodankar said.
