Doctor was assaulted over death of newborn baby boy of attacker’s sister
Panaji : Porvorim police have registered an FIR against one Minesh Narvekar from Porvorim for allegedly assaulting a doctor of a private hospital at Porvorim over the death of a newborn baby boy of his sister.
Police said the assault took place on August 27, and following a complaint lodged by Dr Amol Tilve, Porvorim police registered an offence under various sections of the IPC and also under the Goa Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institutions Act.
Referring to the complaint, police said that accused is the brother of a woman, who had delivered the baby boy on August 25 at the hospital.
Later, the newborn was shifted to the GMC, Bambolim, due to some complications. Subsequently the baby died at the GMC while undergoing treatment, police said.
Enraged by the death, the accused criminally trespassed into the OPD section of the private hospital and assaulted Dr Tilve causing him bodily injuries.
The attack also led to damage to the doctor’s spectacle and medical equipment, which prevented the doctor from carrying out his routine medical practice in the hospital, police said.
The Goa unit of the Indian Medical Association on Saturday condemned the attack on the doctor.
“It’s surprising that the golden land of Goa with high literacy rate is also witnessing such incidents of assaults on doctors. We are always trained for a healthy conversation during the course of treatment of any disease, and we value the doctor-patient relationship,” said the statement issued by president of Goa unit of the IMA Dr Vinayak Buvaji.
“It is not possible for a patient to continue the treatment with a doctor following up over nine months till delivery and say that we were not explained and kept in the dark. It is acceptable to have anxiety, fear and misunderstandings with any complication or unpleasant outcome during the medical treatment by the patient and the relatives. But also it is not acceptable to have these disgraceful acts of assault and abuse towards any doctor and related healthcare worker,” the statement maintained.
Dr Buvaji said the grievance should be put to an official authority like Goa Medical Council, police, courts, consumer forums etc to come to a conclusion if one is dissatisfied with the medical treatment.
The IMA appealed to Porvorim police to arrest the attacker and take required action as per the relevant acts so as to keep the morale and confidence high in doctors.
“If the silence is the answer from the concerned authorities then it would be the beginning of the end of a noble medical profession,” Dr Buvaji reckoned.
