Man accused of assaulting Porvorim doctor surrenders

Panaji: The main accused in the Dr Amol Tilve assault case Minesh Narvekar surrendered before the Porvorim police on Tuesday.

Police had registered First Information Report (FIR) against Narvekar last Friday for allegedly assaulting Dr Tilve in a private hospital in Porvorim over the issue of death of a newborn baby boy of his sister.

On Monday, around 100 doctors had protested outside the Porvorim police station over the alleged delay in arrest of the accused persons. Subsequently, late Monday evening, police arrested three accused persons Rohish Salgaonkar, Krishna Naik and Rohil Salgaonkar, all residents of Porvorim, in connection with the case. Police said the three accused persons were accompanying Narvekar at the time of the incident. All the accused are currently in police custody.

The Porvorim police had registered the offence under various sections of the Indian penal code (IPC) and also under the Goa Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institutions Act.

Referring to the complaint lodged by Dr Tilve, the police had said that the accused Narvekar is the brother of the woman who had delivered the baby boy on August 25 in the hospital. Later, the baby was shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) at Bambolim due to some complications. Subsequently, the baby died at GMC while undergoing treatment, police had said.
