Mapusa: Assuring taxi operators that their permits will not be cancelled and the related letters will be kept on hold for the time being, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said the government will take a right decision on the digital fare meter installation issue before Ganesh Chaturthi by taking the taxi operators into confidence.
“We will come up with the best solution. I am with them. Since there is a legal dispute, there are talks already going on with the Advocate General, transport director and others. We will work out an appropriate solution so that the taxi owners have no problem,” Sawant said while replying to the media during his visit to the Siolim constituency.
Replying to taxi operators on the notices issued to them, Sawant said, “I have asked the department to hold letters on permits. The permits will not be cancelled.”
It may be noted that the transport department has cancelled permits of around 2,000 taxis whose owners failed to comply with the Bombay High Court direction to instal digital fare meters with accessories. The action came after repeated warnings by the transport department failed to prod those taxi owners to accept the court directive.
A delegation of the Vagator-Caisua Taxi Owners’ Association handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister during his visit to Chapora on Tuesday and requested him to look into their issues pertaining to relaxation in fitment of digital fare meter, renewal of all permits and the demand to scrap app-based taxis in Goa. During the interaction, the taxi operators raised their grievances and said their vehicles have not been operating since the last one and half year because of which they have no income.
“We need at least Rs 50,000 to bring our vehicles back on roads. We have suffered greatly during the pandemic. Now the Chief Minister has given us an assurance,” said a taxi owner Rohidas Naik.
