Assault on doctor: IMA demands strict action

Around 100 doctors gathered outside Porvorim police station in protest over delay in arresting accused

Panaji: Aggrieved over the alleged delay in arresting an accused who had assaulted a doctor at a private hospital in Porvorim, several doctors, on Monday, gathered outside the Porvorim police station in protest, and demanded strict action in the case.

Around 100 doctors under the banner of Indian Medical Association (IMA) led by its president Dr Vinayak Buvaji were present, and demanded arrest of the main accused and also others who were accompanying him.

Doctors expressed displeasure over the alleged delay in arresting the accused and said that when the complaint was filed, the accused was present at the police station and added that he was later allowed to go home.

However, as per the police the accused is untraceable and added that he has filed an anticipatory bail application before a court in North Goa.

Dr Shekhar Salkar, while speaking to the media persons, said that “violence against doctors is unacceptable, and that message has to go loud and clear that you cannot take law into the hands. Police have to take stern action against those involved in the assault.”

DySP Edwin Colaco, while speaking to the doctors, said that the investigation is going in the right direction. and assured that whoever is involved in the attack will be brought to the task.

Later, the delegation of the doctors also met the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in connection with the case.

It may be recalled that on Friday last week, the Porvorim police had registered an FIR against one Minesh Narvekar from Provorim on charges of allegedly assaulting Dr Amol Tilve at a private hospital at Porvorim over the issue of death of a newborn baby boy of his sister.

Following a complaint lodged by Tilve, the Porvorim police had registered offences under various sections of the IPC and also under the Goa Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institutions Act.

Referring to the complaint, the police said that accused is the brother of a woman who had delivered the baby boy on 25th August at the hospital. Later, the baby was shifted to the GMC, Bambolim, due to some complications. Subsequently the baby died at the GMC while undergoing treatment, the police said.

Meanwhile, the Association of Private Nursing Homes and Hospitals, on Monday, condemned the attack on Dr Amol Tilve.

“Though the doctors and hospitals in the state are protected under the newly notified MEDICARE Act 2013, there seems to be lack of awareness in general public about its provisions for very severe penalties and imprisonment,” states the statement issued by the association.

“We demand that the most stringent sections under the Act be applied to this case and the culprit be given exemplary punishment swiftly so that right message goes out in the society at large,” it reads further.

Congress leader Elvis Gomes interacting with media persons said that a thorough free and fair investigation is needed in the matter and added that there shouldn’t be any interference in the investigation or else it would weaken the autonomy of the police department.

Meanwhile, in connection with the case, Porvorim police have arrested Rohish Salgaonkar, Krishna Naik and Rohil Salgaokar, all residents of Porvorim.
