The vigilance department since 2015 has suspended 25 gazetted officers for various reasons. Among the suspended were nine doctors – eight from the health department and one from the department of commissioner, labour and employment (ESI Panaji).
Most of the suspended gazetted officers were from the health department: eight doctors and two engineers. However, most of them have been reinstated in service.
The data pertaining to the vigilance department was tabled through a written reply in the assembly by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to a question posed by Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte.
The written reply informed that on April 2, 2015, the vigilance department suspended Dr Tanuja Kamat, assistant professor in the department of biochemistry, GMC, for dereliction in official duties.
On September 24, in the same year, Dr A M Mesquita, professor and head, department of pulmonary medicine, GMC, and Dr Lalita Fernandes, lecturer, were suspended for conducting clinical trials on patients without the approval of the government.
On March 30, 2017, Dr Mahendra S Khanolkar, junior radiologist at the North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa, was suspended on the complaint of alleged molestation of a patient.
On October 27, 2017, Dr Anil Rane, senior surgeon at the Hospicio Hospital, Margao, was suspended in connection with the issuance of sickness certificates
to police personnel on flimsy grounds; on the basis of the certificates, the personnel had been skipping important and emergency duties assigned to them.
On February 2, 2018, Dr Siddhartha S Banaulikar, assistant professor in forensic medicine, GMC, was suspended for issuing fake death certificate.
On October 1, 2018, Dr E J Rodrigues, professor and head, department of forensic, medicine, GMC, (who had retired but was on extension) was suspended in connection with the goof-up of a dead body.
Dr Angelo Mascarenhas, a medical officer at the primary health centre, Curtorim, was suspended on August 8, 2019 in connection with a molestation case.
On November 2, 2020, Dr Shubhangi Lotlikar, an administrative medical officer at the ESI, Panaji, was suspended over the matter related to sizable stock of expired medicine purchased without taking into consideration the requirements.
