In a latest mishap on NH66 at Gulem-Canacona, a truck hit 14 cattle squatting on the middle of the highway and as a result of which 12 bovines lost their lives and two are being treated for grave injuries.
The NH66 from Balli to Polem and more so the four-lane Manohar Parrikar bypass has become a deathtrap for cattle.
A businessman said that at least after this accident at Gulem, the authorities as well as the public will realise that the issue of stray cattle is a serious one especially on the highways.
What surprises locals is that inspite of numerous such accidents, no authorities have come forward to devise a plan that could effectively minimise the number of bovine deaths.
A local at Gulem said that it is not totally the fault of motorists or the authorities but the cattle owners who let the bovines to wander on the roads.
There have been 10 stray cattle deaths in separate accidents along the Balli-Canacona highway.
