A portion of Casa Menezes building in Gandhi market, Margao collapsed on Saturday.  Luckily, no casualty was reported since the incident took place in the wee hours.

District administration officials, including Salcete mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar, visited the site and took stock of the damage.  The damaged area has been cordoned off. The building in question is one of the old structures in the town.

Collector Ruchika Katyal later directed chief officer of Margao Municipal Council Agnelo Fernandes to immediately evacuate the occupants of the partly collapsed building in order to avert any tragedy.

She also directed the chief officer to stop business activities in the building till further orders and provide necessary assistance to PWD for removal of the debris.

The collector’s order came after the Salcete mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar along with talathi carried out an inspection at the site of the damaged building.

Gaonkar was asked to provide necessary magisterial and police support to ensure law and order at the site.

“We have to ensure that the attached buildings are not damaged. Measures will be adopted to save these buildings,” the mamlatdar said. As the news regarding the building damage went viral, people started visiting the site.

Police and fire and emergency services personnel were seen at the site in the morning.

It is pertinent to note that there are several old structures in and around Margao which, despite being declared unfit for occupation by South Goa district administration, remain occupied.
