Valpoi
The motorists commuting on Valpoi-Ponda road via Ganjem are having a harrowing time due to the potholes.
Several motorists, especially, those who travel from Ponda to Valpoi have been raising the issue on social media platforms. They have been expressing their ire and concerns as they continue to get stuck in the traffic jams for long hours due to the potholes.
“Due to the sludge the stretch of road has become slippery at Ganjem, and these potholes which were existing before floods have now turned into puddles making it risky for the motorists to travel” said a resident of Ganjem.
A lady teacher, who traverses this route, told this daily that she had a miraculous escape once while negotiating the numerous potholes, which remain filled with rainwater.
“I and my colleague use this route to reach Valpoi by bike, and due to numerous potholes the bike jiggled and we fell down. Though, we didn’t suffer any major injuries but pain started in my backbone,” said the lady teacher, who has urged the concerned authorities to take up repair work on an urgent basis.
The PWD was carrying out road expansion work just before the rains.
Several trenches have been dug up along the Usgaon-Ganje road, which are posing risk during the monsoon. Due to severe rainfall this year the road work was halted and due to the considerable rise in the number of heavy vehicles, the road has developed many potholes.
“Since the roadwork was underway, concerned authorities have barred traffic movement along one side and vehicles using this route have to move along the single lane, which sometimes cause traffic congestion. Due to potholes and sludge, motorists moving via this route have to face difficulties and there is a great risk to their lives,” said a motorist, who travels regularly to reach his office at Tisk.
With many people, including government officials and politicians visiting flood-hit Ganjem village to extend their help, increase in the number of vehicles on the road has led to a muddy layer along the route.
