Fishing season to commence tomorrow

Margao: The new fishing season will commence on  August 1, after a 61-day ban period.

The season, however, is expected to see a slow start with just a handful of trawlers  venturing into the sea for solar prawns.

Cutbona jetty was seen slowly returning to life as workers loaded fishing nets into the trawlers.

Even as the new  fishing season is set to commence, old problems still continue at the jetty, with sanitation being the major problem.

While the fisheries department has invited expression of interest for setting up a sewage treatment plant for Cutbona, the toilet block is yet to see the light of the day.

Also, the bathing facility is extremely poor for the 3,000 workers with wastewater getting discharged directly into the river.

The fishing season will also commence with a familiar problem, faced due to the sand bar at the mouth of the river, as the decks for the sea training wall project are yet to be cleared.

Further, the new extension of the jetty is yet to become fully operational 6 years after the foundation stone was laid for the same.
