Referring to the incident of rape of minor girls at Benaulim, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said the responsibility to ensure safety of children doesn’t only lie with police and government but also the parents.

The incident had reportedly taken place at beachside in Benaulim and the matter was subsequently reported at Colva police station by the victims. In this connection, the police have arrested four accused persons.

Sawant questioned the ineffective parenting and said that parents ought to take care of their

children.

“In this particular case, 10 children went to the beach together of which six returned home and four- two boys and two girls stayed at the beach throughout the night. When 14-15 years old children stay at the beach throughout the night…then I feel that we as parents ought to think. Saying that they don’t listen and what can we do is not the answer,” Sawant said, responding during the calling attention motion moved by Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao.

He informed the House that Rajesh Mane, driver of the agriculture department is one of the four accused arrested in the case.

Sawant assured the members of the state legislative assembly to expedite the probe into rape of minor girls at Benaulim.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai came down heavily for raising questions on parenting as regards to allowing children to roam out of the House late night.

“How can you raise objection to girls moving out late night. It is the duty of the police and government to make Goa so safe that girls can roam freely whenever they want,” Sardesai said.

He alleged that there is political interference in investigation of heinous crimes such as rape and murder.

He pointed out to the House that state police have failed to solve a gang-rape case that took place in the year 2018 and claimed that the accused persons are yet to be traced by the police. Chief Minister assured to inform the House about the status of the particular case.

Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said that with influx of migrant population it was extremely important for the concerned authorities to ensure tenant verification in every corner of the state.

MLA Churchill Alemao brought to the notice of the House that there is increase in incidents of house robberies in his constituency and said that the police have failed to nab or arrest the robbers who are involved in house robberies and chain snatchings.

Pointing out that recently, there were two robberies in Benaulim village, Alemao said that the police department should step up vigilance and catch the culprits as soon as possible.

Chief Minister in his written reply stated that all efforts are in progress to trace the culprits and to recover the stolen property by rounding off the suspected persons as well as the movement of ex-convicts, habitual offenders and history  sheeters has been put under surveillance.

He informed that local informants are alerted regarding the nature of offences and in tracing the culprits. So also different police stations across the state are contacted regarding similar cases reported in their respective jurisdictions which have been detected.
