Says their opinion should be considered before finalising party candidate
Margao: A delegation of Sanguem Congress block members met Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, on Saturday, to raise their objections, after reports appeared that Sanguem independent MLA Prasad Gaonkar was interested in joining the Congress and that he was assured a Congress ticket for the assembly elections to be held next year.
Sanguem Congress block committee led by Abhiit Prabhudesai said that party workers were unhappy with the development and asked for their opinion to be taken into consideration before making a decision.
“We have heard that the current MLA Prasad Gaonkar is interested in joining the Congress and that he has been assured a ticket for the upcoming elections. We had come to ask why. We the party workers have been working for the party for the past five to six years. How is it that such a decision is being taken without taking us into confidence? Party workers who have worked for the party for years are being kept aside, and that should not happen. All the party workers are asking why the MLA didn’t join the party at the time of the ZP elections. We are not against him joining the party, but he should not be given a ticket without taking our opinion into consideration,” said Prabhudesai.
After meeting with the delegation, Kamat said the AICC general secretary and Goa desk in-charge would be holding talks with them during his next visit, and urged them to place their grievances before him.
“The party general secretary is holding meetings with many individuals and is in conversation with the party workers also. During his last visit, he visited and spoke to block committees in Cumbarjua, Sanquelim and Santa Cruz. Next time he will come to South Goa and whatever they feel they can share directly with him,” said Kamat.
