The National Students Union of India, Goa along with students of D El Ed met the director of State Council of Educational Research and Training Nagaraj Honnekeri demanding to conduct semester-end examinations online.

“As much as we are in favour of answering exams in offline mode during normal times, which will encourage teacher trainees to do their best and excel even in theory papers just as they have given their best in practicals, we are still of the opinion that precautions are better than cure,” stated a related memorandum, adding, “We cannot ignore the number of active cases still present in Goa and definitely not deny the chances of community transmission in such situations.”

“Even as the Goa University has decided to conduct all the final year students’ exams online including B ED, which is a higher degree in comparison with Diploma in Elementary Education, we are hoping you too can assess us through online mode for this semester,” stated a student.

Eric Stephens, the NSUI in-charge of Goa, said that SCERT should go for online exams as all the top universities in India have adopted this method.

Meanwhile, the director of SCERT asserted that since the number of students in each examination centre is few, it could hold offline/ physical exams and the probability of students coming in contact with the virus are minimal.

NSUI’s Goa president Naushad Chowdhari argued that the students who are home quarantined may come to answer the exams as they don’t want to delay in answering the exam, and in this way, could transmit the virus in the centre, hence the online exam is a safer option.

He further said that if the pending exams are not declared online by this week then NSUI, Goa along with all the students will march to the Chief Minister’s residence next Monday.

The director of SCERT later said that he has taken cognizance of the matter and the same will be discussed to find a solution.
