The North Goa district road safety committee chaired by additional collector Gopal Parsekar has asked the Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL) to start on a trial basis the unique numbering system on all shuttle routes and select highway routes.
The project is mooted as over the years there is a marked increase in the influx of migrant labourers and rise in tourists into the state who encounter difficulty in understand names that are in local language.
“Many of them can’t identify a public transport bus bound to their destinations. In Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai, passengers board a bus based on the route number. That makes the travel easy. Despite the influx of the migrant population, we are stuck in the old system. However, we will soon start the numbering system for bus routes on shuttle routes,” GOACAN convener Ronald Martins said after attending the meeting.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from KTCL, traffic department, PWD, education, municipal administration, excise, panchayats, health and representative from NGO GOACAN.
Detailed discussion was held on tackling stray cattle menace and it was informed to the committee that about 34 panchayats in north district have signed MoUs under Goa Stray Cattle Management Scheme with different animal welfare organisations to impound stray cattle that has resulted in deaths in several road accidents.
It was decided to share the data with the traffic department to inspect and identify cattle crossing points and display board for safety of road users.
In the wake of complaints about overpricing of helmets, which are mandatory for two-wheeler riders, the committee decided to start joint raids by involving officials from departments of legal metrology, civil supplies, commercial tax, traffic and transport in North district.
As per discussion held during the meeting, the traders purchase branded helmets from outside state but the same commodity is unpacked and sold at above MRP thus encouraging people to buy inferior and low-priced
helmets.
During the council meeting, it was also decided to integrate bus timings with arrival of train at Karmali and Tivim railway stations to run parallel bus service and display route boards outside railway station for the ease of passengers.
The committee also took a decision to direct PWD to visit major district roads and highways in the state and detect legal and illegal speed breakers and hoardings and inform the concerned civic body immediately so that steps can be initiated to remove the illegal ones.
For compliance check on bars displaying ‘Don’t drink and drive’ poster on their premises, the committee asked the excise department to prepare a list of all bars who have and who have not displayed the poster.
