The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has directed the village panchayats of Keri, Morlem and Poriem to inspect the Valvanti river every six months, and ensure no pollution and encroachments in the river.
A three-member commission comprising chairperson Justice U V Bakre and members Desmond D’Costa and Pramod V Kamat stated that these three panchayats must see that dumped or accumulated waste is timely removed and take all measures to curtail pollution of Valvanti and its tributaries, springs and nullahs, and prevent any encroachments.
The commission had taken suo moto cognisance based on a newspaper report over increasing encroachment and pollution in the Valvanti river, and directed secretaries of village panchayats of Keri, Morlem, Poriem and the directorate of panchayats and health services, WRD chief engineer and member secretary of Goa State Pollution Control Board to file a detail report.
Director of panchayats and Goa State Pollution Control Board said they have taken steps after receiving notice from the commission and issued directions to the village panchayats of Keri, Morlem, and Poriem for proper collection and disposal of waste.
The commission had found that these villages have displayed sign boards near river bank prohibiting washing of vehicles and dumping of waste or sewage in the river and informing about the fine for violating the order.
The three members’ bench stated that the panchayats and other authorities took steps to control the dumping of garbage in the river after the media highlighted the issue and after commission issued notices to government agencies.
