The Commissioner of the Corporation of City of Panaji has urged tax payers/owners/licensees within the jurisdiction of Corporation area to pay their taxes within the extended deadline July 31, 2021 after which interest will be charged.
The notification has been issued on June 25, 2021 and has urged the residents to pay house tax, trade and occupation tax, sign board tax, sanitation charges before the expiry of the deadline on production of previous tax receipts at the time of payment to avoid interests on current dues.
In the notification the last date of the payment was mentioned as extended upto July 31 and after which levy of interest as applicable will be enforced and for online payment one can visit www.ccpgoa.com.
People while reacting to the notification, urged the corporation to be lenient against commercial establishments/shopkeepers/owners since the COVID pandemic is still on and the market was closed to the members of the general public for a long time. Soon after reopening of the market for a 4-hour duration and in the environment of no business, it is very difficult to pay taxes within a month, they said.
While many people felt it is ‘harassment’ as CCP will recover the full amount from shop owners at any cost but felt that pressurising people to within a certain period is not welcomed.
They also informed that now there is no business as people refuse to come to the market due to the fear of the possible third wave of COVID while other corporations outside the state, offer help on humanitarian grounds during COVID days besides relaxing them with certain concessions till their business picks up.
They argued that at present many traders have lost their customers.
“Nobody from any political party came forward nor from the Corporation to enquire about the changed environment but sending notification to pay dues directly is not justified,’’ they pointed out.
Meanwhile, the health department conducted COVID-19 tests in the Panaji municipal market on Wednesday near the fish market even as the state is witnessing a decrease in the new infections.
