Margao new market vendors say they are hit as shops remain shut

Margao: Margao new market vendors held a meeting on Monday calling for the need to allow them to open their shops as their goods were getting spoiled.

They claimed that roadside vendors and kiosks were allowed to operate and were doing brisk business, while those having shops in the market have to follow all the rules and stay shut.

They had made a plea to the South Goa district collector’s office to permit them to open their shops. However, sources in the collectorate informed that their request has been turned down “since the curfew has been extended till June 7.”

Margao civic chairperson Lyndon Pereira and vice chairperson Deepa  Sawal met the market vendors at the entrance of the market and heard their grievances.

“They highlighted how they have been affected with the market being shut for so many days. I told them that it is the Collector that has power to permit opening of the market. I however assured them that action on the roadside illegal vending of fruits and other items would be taken,” Pereira said.

President of the new market vendors association Vinod Shirodkar told Pereira about the hardships they have been facing since the closure of the market. The police were present at the market area to maintain law and order.
