Verdict in Tejpal case likely on May 12

Mapusa: The Additional District and Sessions Court II, Mapusa, on Tuesday, adjourned the final verdict in connection with the alleged rape case involving Tehelka founder and former editor Tarun Tejpal and now the verdict is likely to be pronounced on May 12.

On Tuesday, the trial court was scheduled to pronounce the final order in the eight-year-old case.

During the hearing, special public prosecutor advocate Francisco Tavora along with assistant public prosecutor advocate Cyndiana Silva and investigating officer DySP Sunita Sawant were present. Tarun Tejpal was also present along with his family members.

Judge Kshama Joshi adjourned and fixed the matter for May 12 for pronouncement of judgment.

Speaking to reporters, special public prosecutor advocate Francisco Tavaro said that the Judge has adjourned the date to May 12 while giving no reasons for the postponement.

It may be recalled that Tejpal was booked for allegedly raping a junior colleague in a lift of a five-star hotel during an event in 2013. On November 22, 2013, Goa police had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and lodged an FIR against Tejpal and he was arrested and later released on bail.  In this connection, the court had framed charges in September 2017 under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrong confinement), 354 (assaulting or using criminal force on a woman with an intent to outrage her modesty), 354-A (outraging modesty), 354 -B (criminal assault with intent to disrobe a woman), 376 (rape), 376(2) (f) (person in position of trust or authority over women, committing rape of such women) and 376(2) (k) (rape of a woman by a person being in position of control or dominance over the woman) of Indian Penal Code against Tejpal.  He had pleaded not guilty before court and claimed trial. The trial in the case was completed last month.
