Calangute VP has issued ‘stop work’ order over hill cutting: sarpanch

Calangute: Village panchayat of Calangute has issued a ‘stop work’ order to a builder,  after the locals and the bio-diversity committee of the village objected to the hill cutting and felling of trees at  Gaurawaddo East.

The residents of Gaurawaddo East revealed to this daily that complaints were filed with the North Goa Collector,  Conservator of Forest and village panchayat against the construction activity going on in the land under survey no 88/1, 88/2, and 88/3, admeasuring 34,000 square metres using earthmoving machinery, and added that even after the village panchayat issued a stop work order to the builder, “the construction work is going on, taking advantage of the  weekend.”

A villager Augustine D’Costa had complained to the sarpanch stating that “the development work has  not been stopped as directed by the village panchayat through ‘stop work’ order bearing no VP/ Cal/F-20/21-22/427 dated 23/04/2021.”

“The builder is still going ahead with the construction activity on Saturday and Sunday,” he stated.

Another villager and secretary of bio- diversity committee of Calangute Benedict Lobo told that the hill at Boaviage in Calangute is full of plants with medicinal value.

“Illegal hill cutting and destruction of bio-diversity have been done by the owner of the plots no 88/1,88/2, 88/3,” he said.

When contacted, sarpanch of Calangute Shawn Matins told this daily that locals and the bio-diversity committee had filed complaints with the panchayat in that regard.

“We conducted site inspection and found  that hill cutting as well as cutting of trees were undertaken, and as such the panchayat issued a stop work order to the owner and sent letters to the deputy collector and conservator of forest, Director of Panchayats and the Calangute police to act on the illegal construction going on at Boaviage,  Mortan in Gaurawaddo East,” he added.
