Accusing the government of failing to keep its promises, the sugarcane growers from the Sanguem taluka have decided to re-launch the agitation against the alleged anti-farmer policy of the government.
Vice president of Uss Utpadak Sangharsh Samiti (UUSS) Chandan Unandkar, while addressing a press conference at Ganpati Mandap, Colony 1, at Vaddem, said that they have learnt that the government has decided to implement the scheme of payment to the farmers which they had opposed.
He said that considering the request of the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar, a meeting was held on January 6, 2021 wherein the Chief Minister had assured that the sugarcane growers will be paid compensation at the rate Rs 3,600 per tonne considering the average production over eight years.
He further said that they were also assured about cleaning of the sugarcane fields free of cost.
Unandkar further said, “But, now we have reliably learnt that the government wants to go back on its promises and do injustice to sugarcane growers by implementing the old scheme of payment.”
Advisor of the samiti Anand Gaonkar said, “Anticipating government plan to close down the Sanjivani sugarcane factory, we had formed the UUSS. Under its banner, we had started indefinite agitation at Sanguem for the fulfillment of our demands. Following a few days of agitation, on January 6, 2021, the Chief Minister had agreed to all our demands. Therefore, we had withdrawn our agitation but now we have learnt that the government is going back on its word given to us and is trying to implement the old anti-farmers scheme.”
“Now, we are compelled to launch another agitation to get our demands fulfilled,” Gaonkar added.
