Former senior journalist Mahadev Khandekar, on Saturday, joined the Congress party along with his supporters from Sankhali assembly constituency.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar welcomed Khandekar and his supporters into the party-fold at a function held in Congress House
in Panaji.
Interacting with media persons, Chodankar claimed that the Congress is receiving tremendous support from the people, and the joining of Khandekar will send a strong message that people from vivid fields are interested to join the Congress party.
“Journalist fraternity has wider wisdom. Khandekar being from this field and having experience of 25 years knows how BJP has ruined Goa and also knows that Congress is coming to power. His contribution in journalism, and as an artist, he is connected with society and this will help Congress to grow,”
Chodankar said.
He claimed that the people from the Sankhali constituency, represented by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, are expressing anger against the MLA and BJP government for doing nothing.
“Sawant who is the MLA from Sankhali is so insecure, that he has resorted to ‘dadagiri’ whenever a new leader starts the work in Sankhali. But now there is a wave against him and definitely people of Sankhali will defeat him like former chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar,”
he said.
Congress legislature party leader Digambar Kamat took to Twitter welcoming Khandekar into the Congress.
“Warm Welcome to Senior Journalist Mahadev Khandekar in @INCGoa. I am confident that his joining in @INCIndia with his hundreds of supporters is another step ahead of Congress Party to emerge victorious in the next assembly elections winning Trust & Confidence of People of Goa,” Kamat tweeted.
Speaking on the occasion, Khandekar said, “I feel proud to join Congress as it is party having values of non-violence, truth, respect to democracy, respect to rights of people and taking people together on the way of progress.”
The former journalist, who is the resident of Kudne-Sankhali, referring to the people of his Sankhali constituency said that the power and the mighty are only working for the welfare of a small section of influential people of the society and overlooking the basic needs and doing injustice to the poor.
He said that the economy of Goa has collapsed and unemployment is
increasing.
“To overcome this situation we need a new vision,» Khandekar said and added that he will use his ‘political maturity’ to strengthen the Congress.
