Curchorem

The election to the post of chairperson of Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC), which is scheduled to be held on Thursday morning, is expected to be a quite interesting as two councillors belonging to the group of local MLA Nilesh Cabral have filed their nominations on Wednesday, the last of  day of filing of the nominations.

The meeting will be presided over by Deputy Collector of Dharbandora Kedar Naik, it is learnt.

Rucha Vast has already been elected unopposed as deputy chairperson as no other councillor filed the nomination for the post.

Out of the total 15 councillors, 6 councillors including Vishwas Sawant, Jasmin Braganza, Sushant Naik, Carmelina Mories, Rucha Vast and Toney Fernandes belong to the BJP-backed panel. Five other councillors, including Balkrishna Hodarkar, Damodar Bhende, Yolanda Pereira, Reema Alise and Pramod Naik, who have been elected as independent candidates, have reportedly joined the MLA’s group, taking the tally to 11. Despite hectic efforts on the part of BJP and also by the MLA Cabral, there no compromise could be reached between councillor Vishwas Sawant and Balkrishna Hodarkar, and now both have filed their nominations for the post of the chairperson.

The scale could tilt in favour of Vishwas Sawant being the Curchorem block president of BJP, and has been elected for the second consecutive term as the councillor from the same ward.

But there is every possibility of some disgruntled councillors from the majority group joining hands with the four opposition councillors to upset the applecart.

The four opposition councillors include, ex-chairperson Pradip Naik, Aparna Prabhu Dessai, Clementina Fernandes (Swabhiman group) and Mangaldas Ghadi.
