Acting on the illegal sand mining activity, Ponda flying squad raided a riverside area at Panchwadi in Shiroda on Sunday and seized 6 cubic metres of sand worth Rs 10,000 and a boat involved in
the activity.
During the raid, the flying squad also managed to detain two persons, who were found at the site.
The sand found at the site has been dumped back into the river, said officials from the Ponda Deputy Collector’s office.
As per the information available, the flying squad had received a tip-off about the illegal sand
mining at Panchwadi following which the flying squad team including Ponda police and others raided the area and found 6 cubic metres of sand stacked on the riverside without any lease or licence from competent authority.
After the seizure, police officials dumped the sand back into the river as per the laid down guidelines. A boat was found at the site, which was probably used for sand mining,
officials said.
Though two persons were detained during the raid, an offence has been registered against an unknown person by the police under Sections 379 and 21 of Mines and Mineral Development and regulation Act, 1957. Further investigation is in progress.
