Pointing out that people particularly the youngsters are not following COVID-19 appropriate behaviour, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Wednesday said that the state government will not shy away from cracking the whip against people flouting COVID-19 norms.

He informed that there are currently around 160 COVID-19 positive patients admitted in South Goa District Hospital, Margao and Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

“It is a social responsibility, how much can we tell people? It’s not that we will shy away from our responsibility. If the time comes we will crack the whip,” Rane said interacting with media persons at GMC.

“We are not a police raj state. It is very difficult for the government to crack the whip every time, it is for each individual to think.  Youngsters don’t wear mask. It becomes a load on the system. Doctors are working tirelessly and we can’t put an increased workload on them,” the minister added.

Dean GMC Dr S M Bandekar said that of the total 160 COVID-19 positive patients 80 of them are receiving treatment at GMC, adding that there are 11 critical patients battling for their life in ward 146 of the GMC, which is designated to treat critical COVID-19 patients.

Earlier, the Health Minister hailed the GMC doctors for conducting the second case of organ retrieval and transplant from a brain dead donor under the deceased donor transplant programme of SOTTO Goa.

It is pertinent to note that a 62-year-old woman admitted for subarachnoid haemorrhage, after a clinical diagnosis, was declared brain dead. Her family stepped forward and requested for organ donation of the deceased following which both kidneys and liver were harvested from the deceased donor.

The kidneys were allotted to two patients in Goa, while the liver was provided to a recipient in Gujarat as per the sequential order of the SOTTO and ROTTO.

The GMC team led by the head of department (HoD) Urology, Dr Madhumohan Prabhudessai and HOD of Nephrology, Dr J P Tiwari successfully conducted two kidney transplants on end-stage kidney failure patients on Tuesday. Dr Madhumohan Prabhudessai informed that both the kidneys were transplanted successfully, and the patients are being stabilised and are recovering well.

“Kidney transplant is the only best option available for end-stage renal failure patients. In GMC post-transplant patients are monitored regularly and the treatment and medications are provided free of cost,” Dr J P Tiwari said.
