Ex-Speaker Surendra Sirsat passes away at 75

Former Speaker and ex-MLA of Mapusa Surendra Sirsat passed away on Monday night following a brief illness. He was 75.

Funeral will be held on Tuesday morning at the Dattawadi Hindu crematorium in Mapusa.

Sirsat was rushed to a private hospital in Mapusa last Friday afternoon in a critical condition and admitted in the intensive care unit. He was not keeping well since the last few days. Hospital officials said Sirsat was initially suffering from liver failure which further led to multi-organ failure and he was subsequently put on a ventilator.

Sirsat started his political career as a councillor of Mapusa municipal council.

council. He was elected as the Mapusa MLA first in 1977. Later he was elected again in 1989 and 1994. He also served as Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly in 1990.

Sirsat has also contributed to the education field. He started his career as a teacher and went on to become principal. He was also a writer and has to his credit short stories and poems, which have been published. Besides, he has also written textbooks on commerce, accountancy and secretarial practice for classes XI and XII.

He was also a stage artiste and was associated with various organisations like Hindu Gramasth Sabha, Vaishya Mandal, Dnyanprassarak Mandal and others.
