The work on improvement of the Colva creek that was taken up in the month of January is expected to be completed by December this year, according to the Water Resource Development (WRD) department in a response during the Assembly session.

In response to a question raised by Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, Minister for Water Resources Filipe Nery Rodrigues said that there were five projects that were being undertaken by the department in the constituency giving details about the work on the Colva creek.

The stipulated date of completion of the Colva creek project is December 23, 2021, informed Rodrigues. He further stated that the improvement of the Colva creek and construction of
retaining wall wherever necessary in Colva would be undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 9.74 crore and that it had currently reached 40 percent completion.

The work of improving the Colva creek has been a long pending demand from the residents of the village as it has had to bear the brunt of discharge of sewage from nearby commercial establishments. In the past, residents have said that the creek was a clean water body where they would engage in fishing activities.

Alemao had in the month of January inaugurated the work of improvement of the creek calling it important since Colva had been classified as an iconic beach and was a tourist attraction. He had also warned against the release of sewage into the water body saying anyone found doing so would have their establishments shut down.

In addition, the WRD has also engaged in four other projects. These included protection measures to the bank of River Sal and pond at Chadvaddo in Benaulim costing Rs 1.5 crore and the renovation of sluice gates and bund of Igorjem Tollem in Orlim costing Rs 86 lakh, both of which have been completed with the final bill clearance pending.

Works on the protection wall for the bank of River Sal at Khareband costing Rs 81 lakh and protective measures to the bund in Xetmalem, Carmona costing Rs 52 lakh are still under progress and have reached 95 percent and 20 percent completion respectively, informed
Rodrigues.
