The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party is considering the proposal of city MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate to allow him decide the Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), while the party recommends the candidate for the post of the Deputy Mayor.
A highly placed party source informed this daily that Monserrate is keen to have his son Rohit, who has won from ward number 3 at the recently held election to the city Corporation, as the new city Mayor.
The BJP source informed that the party wants to have a meeting with Monserrate over the election to the posts of the city Mayor and the Deputy Mayor. However, as Monserrate has been hospitalised at the Goa Medical College after being infected with COVID-19, the same could not materialise.
The BJP wants to have a senior councillor having previous experience in the CCP council as the city Mayor since Rohit is inexperienced and elected for the first time on the council of the Corporation.
The city MLA, on the other hand is keen to have his son on city Mayor’s chair so that he makes his entry in public life with
a bang.
The nominations for the post of city Mayor and Deputy Mayor need to be filed by March 29 by 3 pm.
The elections to posts of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and members of other committees of the civic body are scheduled to be held on March 30 at 11 am.
Meanwhile, BJP has finalised candidates for 16 of the 20 municipal wards of Mapusa, for election to the Mapusa Municipal Council, after extensive deliberation carried out on Sunday in the presence of state BJP president Sadanand Tanavade.
The core team of the party including Tanavade, Laxmikant Parsekar, Satish Dhond and Joshua D’Souza
among others met over 700 workers, during the last two days and shortlisted 16 candidates.
Polls for five municipalities – including the Mapusa Municipal Council – across the state are likely to be held before April 24, as the Goa Board exams are scheduled to start from April 24.
