Rohit Monserrate, the son of Panaji MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, and Wasant Agashikar have been elected unopposed as the city Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively. The official announcement, however, will be made on Tuesday.
Returning Officer Narayan Kavlekar said on Monday that only two nominations were filed – one for the post of city Mayor by Rohit Monserrate and the other for the post of Deputy Mayor by Wasant Agashikar – till the time ended for filing of the nomination papers.
Speaking to this daily, he said both, Rohit and Wasant, were elected unopposed to the posts but the announcement will be made on Tuesday during the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) meeting at 11 am wherein various committees will also be formed.
Speaking to media, Rohit said, “All of us will have to work together for the development of the capital city of Panaji. The developmental work which was mentioned in the manifesto besides whatever we promised earlier to the people of Panaji will be undertaken and in order to carry on the developmental works we have a very good team. We can do a lot of things.”
Stating that young people have got a chance to plan for the city, Rohit said there are many experienced people on the panel. “With the help of the government, we should be able to carry out the developmental works smoothly,” he said.
The official announcement declaring the new city Mayor and Deputy Mayor and appointment of other committee members of the CCP will be made on March 30 at 11 am.
