‘ Controversial’ Lokayukta Act amendment bill introduced in the house

Digital Goa, Jan 27 – Goa government today introduced the controversial The Goa Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill, 2021 in the state legislative assembly. Social activists and concerned citizens have raised fears that the Lokayukta Act amendment may dilute the very institution of Lokayukta. The Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2021 which will facilitate creation of new wards in municipal areas ahead of elections to these urban local bodies which are scheduled in April, The Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and The Goa Staff Selection Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2021 were also introduced today. Three calling attentions also came before the house. The one raised by united opposition was regarding the attempts by the Government to legalise production of Cannabis in the State of Goa, which is being used as Narcotic Drug and banned under Narcotic Substance Law. CM Sawant assured the house that the govt will not go ahead with the cannabis plantation proposal. The second one related to loan from O.B.C. Corporation and third was about alleged recent scam of Rs. 39 crores reported in the Visionaries Urban Cooperative Credit Society Limited.
