3 linear projects: CEC visits Mollem, Tambdi Surla, MPT; meets NGOs & politicians

Digital Goa, Jan 23 – Central Empowered Committee(CEC) today visited Mollem, MPT and Tamdi Surla and also heard political leaders, members of Wildlife Board, and other NGOs  such as Goyank Kollso Naka, Youth Associations, Wildlife associations etc.) on the last day of their three day visit to the state. “Generally, CEC has supported the allegations made by Goa Foundation,” informed Foundation Director Claude Alvares.

“All those who met CEC have said they do not want the three project and the projects are not in the interest of the state of Goa and Goan economy,” said Alvares who had joined the CEC on their official invitation. He also informed that there were many stark differences between what was told to CEC by the authorities and what was placed by them in public domain. All the data gathered by CEC in this visit will be used to produce a report to be presented to the Supreme Court along with CEC’s recommendations.

“CEC has told us that they will think over the representation given by us. Different studies have also been submitted to them. We have told them that there are tigers and other natural wealth in the area and it has to be protected. We oppose all the three projects as they are harmful to the rich biodiversity of the place,” said Environmentalist and Wildlife Board Member Rajendra Kerkar.

Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and other opposition members also met CEC today. “We briefed them about the actual position. CEC member P. V. Jayakrishnan knows lots of things about Goa as he has served in Goa as Chief Secretary,” said Kamat.

“We expect a very clear mandate from the CEC ,keeping in mind the sentiments of the people and what the actual requirement is. We are opposing it to ensure that coal does not come into Goa,” said Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte.

The CEC consists of its chairman P V Jayakrishnan, member secretary Amarnatha Shetty, member Mahendra Vyas and amicus curiae A D N Rao.
