50 percent of Goa will face flood like situation in future sans anti-flood measures

Digital Goa, Oct 28 –Nearly 50 percent of Goa will face flood like situation in the coming years, if anti flood measures are not taken on priority basis observed State Action Plan for Climate Change (SAPCC). “Low lying (0-15 m above sea level) areas straddling Goa’s many rivers are prone to tidal ingress. These flood plains contain most Khazan lands, whose fragmentation could submerge upto 50 percent of Goa,” the report warns. “With much of Goa sitting barely 5m above the sea level, the destruction of Khazans could sound the death-knell for the state,” it adds.
“Mean annual rainfall in Goa has increased by 68 percent and the frequency of extreme Rainfall events have increased in Goa,” the SAPCC observed. In terms of vulnerability from floods and sea level rise Talukas of Salcete, Tiswadi and Bardez are most vulnerable, it further added.
