DigitalGoa, Sept 25 – Goa recorded the highest rainfall of the century this year. With still 5 days to go for the official end of monsoon season, rainfall has already crossed 162 inches since the beginning of season on June 1. Interestingly, onset of monsoon over Goa this year was delayed almost by a week. Previous highest rainfall in a monsoon season was 160 inches and was recorded in 1961, the year Goa was liberated from Portuguese Rule. Goa has one of the oldest rainfall records in the country which dates back to year 1900. However, there were only two rain gauge centres in the state till the year 1925, which were later increased to five centre – Canacona, Margao, Panaji, Ponda and Valpoi. Today, IMD collects rainfall data from 13 centres across the state. Highest single day rainfall in this season was 54 inches which was recorded on June 17, followed by 52 inches on Sept 22 and 51 inches on Aug 11.
