Goa govt pulled up by High Court for failing to conduct tree census

Digital Goa, Apr 4 – High court has pulled up the Goa government for failing to conduct a census of trees despite the directions of the court. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) filed by NGO Living Heritage Foundation. The matter has been posted for further consideration on April 27,2022. The court asked the North and South Goa Tree Authorities to come up with effective solutions to carry out the census and comply with “the statutory as well as the judicial mandate”. In a reply filed before the high court, the Goa government had expressed its inability to conduct a tree census in the state citing operational and logistical difficulties. The court directed the Member Secretary of the two Tree Authorities to file a further compliance report by April 25, 2022 indicating the actual progress made at the ground level towards compliance with direction.
