Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai along with his party MLA Vinoda Paliencar and Independent Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar on Tuesday met senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi.
Goa Pradesh Congress election in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao and Congress legislature party leader Digambar Kamat were also present during the meeting.
Interestingly, GFP MLA from Saligao constituency Jayesh Salgaonkar was not present at the meeting.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’ over the phone, Rao said the GFP and the Independent MLA have expressed their “complete support” to the Congress to fight the BJP at the state assembly elections, which will be held early next year.
When asked if any decision has been taken as regards Congress-GFP pre-poll alliance or merger of the GFP with the Congress, Rao said, “For now, they are supporting the Congress. Alliance, seat-sharing or any other issue will be discussed later. They are with us in this election.”
Highly-placed sources in the Congress said the party high command has “agreed” to nominate Prasad Gaonkar as a candidate in his home constituency of Sanguem.
Sardesai, who has been pitching for an alliance with the grand old party, took to Twitter to inform the public about his meeting with Gandhi.
“Met Shri @RahulGandhi along with my colleagues @prasadgaonkr13 and @vinod_palyekar. We agreed to fight resolutely, wholeheartedly and unitedly on behalf of the people of #Goa to end the utterly corrupt, incompetent and undemocratic reign of @BJP4Goa,” Sardesai tweeted.
“Continuance of Goa under @BJP4Goa rule is an impossibility! Met with Shri @RahulGandhi. Proud to be working for the 2nd liberation of #Goa with the great grandson of the person who enabled the 1st! The curse of the communal and anti-Goan @DrPramodPSawantgovt will be blown away!,” he said in another tweet.
Minutes later, the GFP on its official social media pages posted a photograph of the said meeting captioned “Team Goa”.
It is pertinent to note that Prasad Gaonkar’s brother Sandesh Gaonkar on July 5, 2021 joined the Congress along with several supporters. And on the same day, the media was told by Congress leaders that Prasad Gaonkar would soon follow suit and join the Congress.
However, as the talks with the Congress derailed, the Sanguem MLA on October 13 extended his support to All India Trinamool Congress. Reliable sources said that Prasad Gaonkar turned back to the Congress as his ‘negotiations’ with the TMC did not work out.
