Commenting on a threat issued by the wholesale fish traders that they would not pay sopo (fees) if the wholesale fish market is not maintained properly from December 1, chairman of South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) Wilfred D’Sa on Tuesday said they would deny entry to these wholesale traders to the wholesale fish market if sopo was not paid.
Speaking to the media on the issue, he said, “We will keep them out of the wholesale fish market, if they do not pay sopo. There are so many local wholesale fish traders who bring their fish for sale. This fresh fish is enough for Goan consumption.”
A week ago the particular threat was issued by president of Wholesale Fish Traders Association Ibrahim Maulana.
Maulana had said, “There are no lights at the wholesale fish market and as a sequel, the traders are fooled by giving the duplicate currency notes to them taking the advantage of darkness.”
Stating that there were potholes at the wholesale fish market areas and water stagnated at the site and “if this is not maintained by December 1,” Maulana had threatened to stop paying the fees to the
SGPDA.
“The wholesale fish traders have score to settle with the sopo collector. We see no reason for it. If any wholesale fish trader does not want to pay sopo for the business being conduct at the wholesale fish market, he can be stopped from coming here,” D’Sa said.
He said, “Atleast this sopo collector cleans the wholesale fish market. The wholesale fish market cannot be fully improved since the proposal for construction of new wholesale fish market by utilising the central government funds has been already mooted. We will soon float tender for it as the MoU has already been signed.”
